Saturday, February 24th. A good turnout of 30 or so assorted members and an absolutely gorgeous day which resulted in a few sun-burnt heads and faces! People were quickly allocated into groups - even some who had not actually come to work! Building on the sleeper wall carried on apace with retrieved, recycled sleepers.
There is now a huge new area of boat parking space with very large sinkers for tie-downs dug in!. A small group built a continuation of the wattle fencing which has helped so far to keep sand off the east exit path. They then moved to re-fence off the outside of the East Barrier.
Various people were involved in moving - or digging out - boats, and the day boats along the middle bank were replaced with toppers (hurray!) and the brambles cut back from the bank. Sand moving was an ongoing job in the tender park and a major job at the West exit was initiated after coffee and cakes and completed in order for the bobcat then to lift and relay the black belting. A small group took a short respite from digging and dragged, from the dune behind the Chandlery, a huge pic-nic table. It is now on the beach awaiting a high tide and Solo sailors in wet suits to float it around to somewhere suitable! And finally, the wooden road roll was finished.!!!
A lot of preparatory work had gone on beforehand; the threading ropes were prepared, the spacers were cut from water pipes, telurites were cut from copper pipes and Ted did an absolutely magnificent job of cutting ALL the wood and then drilling ALL the holes!.
Several teams did the final threading and it is now arranged in rolls in the Solo park, alongside the repaired old road roll, both of which will be laid after the March gales.
John provided his usual yummy, filling soup in the which could be stood up-right - a spoon
Saturday February 7th Not many Solos today but four members did make a good start on building the sleeper wall opposite the wash-down area and a similar number did some more work on the wooden road roll.
Unhappily, Ted’s special saw blew up which slowed down work for a few days!
Saturday, Jan 24th, Well, didn't we have a gorgeous day on Saturday! Not too cold, very little wind and a lovely sun shining on flat, blue water with hordes of multicoloured Training Toppers doing circuits and bumps just off the beach. 20 or more people turned up for varying periods and all slotted into the various jobs that were on offer - all of which, at this time, were considered to be beneficial to Solo Sailors! We were very obliged to Colin for collecting the hazel rods for us at fairly short notice and these were erected in slanting lines outside the East sand barrier. The purpose of these is to catch sand that would otherwise blow over the top and then into the boat parks and also to extend the barrier seawards so that eventually we can dig out more bank on the inside and expand the park. This latter project was also started opposite the wash-down area, with cutting away sleepers and digging out loads of sand which was then dumped in between the hazel fences to kick start the dune. The path between the ex-mirror park was widened so that a Solo can be taken through and part of the main middle pathway was dug out and re-laid flat. All the green matting was rescued from the beach and the repair of old road roll was commenced. Wood for the new road roll had come and a start made cutting it The cake was not very inspiring this time but John's solid soup, made to order, was just what was needed. Everything was packed up just after 3 pm and we returned home feeling satisfied that we had made real progress.
